Websites crash. It’s a fact of life. It has happened to me more than once and I always experience this momentary sinking feeling.
I do get upset. I am an expert but I’m also human! It’s scary when a website crashes and you really don’t know why. But after the initial shock, I start to problem-solve. Here’s what I do.
First, I think about whether I updated anything on my website. Did I update a plugin recently? That might be the problem. Fortunately, I can temporarily deactivate a plugin from my hosting file manager.

If my site is down after I’ve updated a plugin, then I deactivate the plugin. Deactivating a problem plugin might be all it takes to get my website back up and running.
If I deactivate the plugin and the website is still down, I check the error message. If I’m seeing a 500 Internal Server Error, then I know I have to call to my hosting company.

If you don’t get the help you need in your first call, call again until you get the problem solved. When your website is down, it’s a big deal.
