Business owners want straight answers about website management prices, and what they usually get is a mess. Search for the cost of web management and you’ll find numbers ranging from cheaper than a streaming subscription to more than a car payment. Both can be accurate, because the plans behind those numbers have almost nothing in common.
So here’s the straight answer, starting with our own numbers. At Emily Journey & Associates, monthly website maintenance plans start at $299 per month for Basic, $599 for Premium, and $900 for Custom, with hourly support at $200 per hour. Across the industry, prices vary widely because plans vary widely; compare what’s included before comparing the monthly number.

What Emily Journey & Associates charges
I’ll show you mine first, because these are the only numbers on this page I can vouch for completely.
| Plan | Starting price | Built for |
|---|---|---|
| Basic | $299/month | Informational and service websites |
| Premium | $599/month | E-commerce, membership, multi-site, and event-calendar websites |
| Custom | $900/month | Multiple websites or extended SEO support |
| Hourly | $200/hour, three-hour minimum | Defined short-term projects |
Every plan includes a dedicated website manager, responses within 24 hours during the workweek, and no minimum term. Full inclusions and the plan comparison are on the monthly website maintenance plans page.
For context on the related services people often price at the same time: our Core SEO Maintenance is $899 per month, and SEO Growth starts at $1,800 per month, both described on the SEO services page.
We’re a higher-priced provider, on purpose. My website managers are WordPress experts who also teach and do SEO and GEO strategy, and I’ve never figured out how to deliver that at bargain prices.
What I can tell you is what more than a decade of doing this work has taught me: cheap is expensive. I’ve talked with many business owners who thought they were saving money on website management until the invoice for the emergency arrived.
Why quotes vary so much
When two providers quote you $99 and $900 for “website maintenance,” they aren’t pricing the same product. Five things drive the difference.
Scope. Does the plan include content updates, or only software updates? Is anything proactive, or is it all reactive?
Your website’s complexity. An e-commerce site with payment, shipping, and membership integrations costs more to maintain than a ten-page brochure site, because it has more ways to break and higher stakes when it does.
What’s out of plan. Some providers charge full freight for anything beyond the basics. Ask for the out-of-plan hourly rate before you sign; ours is a reduced $150 for plan clients.
Who does the work. A dedicated website manager who knows your site prices differently than an anonymous queue, because you’re buying accumulated context, not just task completion.
Whether strategy is included. Maintenance keeps the site healthy. Management adds planning, coordination, and search visibility work. Quotes that bundle strategy will, and should, cost more; the website management page explains the difference.
Is cheap website management cheaper?
Usually not, and I say that as someone with an obvious interest, so check my reasoning rather than taking my word. Cheap plans stay cheap by cutting the invisible work: tested backups, compatibility management, and someone watching the site between emergencies. You don’t see what was cut until the day you need it, and that day tends to arrive with a consultant’s invoice attached.
There are legitimate budget options for websites with genuinely simple needs. The trap isn’t a low price; it’s a low price on a website that needed more. Our guide to evaluating website maintenance plans walks through the eight things to confirm so you can tell the difference.
Frequently asked questions about website management prices
How much does website management cost for a small business?
At Emily Journey & Associates, most small business websites fit the Basic plan at $299 per month; small businesses running e-commerce or membership functionality usually need Premium at $599. Across the industry, the honest answer is that prices vary too widely to quote a meaningful average without knowing what’s included.
How much does maintenance cost for an e-commerce website?
More than for an informational site, everywhere you shop for it, because transactional sites carry more integrations, more risk, and more urgency. Our e-commerce clients typically fit the Premium plan at $599 per month or a WooCommerce maintenance plan.
What should be included at each price level?
At any price, the floor is five areas: security and updates, backups and recovery, monitoring and performance, compatibility management, and ongoing oversight. Higher tiers add content work, training, project management, and strategy. Our website maintenance packages page breaks down all five areas and what to look for in each.
